In keeping with the theme of the conference, I want to talk about innovation and change in English language teaching, and illustrate theoretical and empirical insights into innovation and change with reference to Go For It, the textbook series I wrote for the middle school system in China. There were five innovations I wanted to introduce into the materials to change the way that language was taught in Chinese schools. I begin the presentation with a discussion on innovation and change in English language education, before presenting a case study of Go For It, , which is based on principles that departed from a ‘traditional’ pedagogy. In the first place, I adopted an analytical rather than a synthetic approach to the design of the syllabus and the selection of experiential content. The view of learning underpinning the pedagogy is an experiential and constructivist one in which learners play an active part in their own learning process rather than one based on the transmission of knowledge. Scaffolded teaching and collaborative learning are also key features of the design of the materials. The approach also seek to develop twenty-first century competencies such as reflective learning, social awareness, self-management of learning, and a a knowledge and respect for the history and culture of  society. The approach also draws on and makes connections between other subjects on the school curriculum.  In the final part of the presentation, I challenge deficit view of education, and, instead, propose a goal of developing the resourceful learner.
